Our Work

The International Working Group on Petroleum Pollution and Just Transition in the Niger Delta (IWG) exists to turn urgent recommendations into concrete action. Building on the Bayelsa State Oil and Environmental Commission’s landmark report, An Environmental Genocide, our work focuses on accountability, justice, and transition. We do this by amplifying community voices, driving global advocacy, and pushing for reforms that deliver real change on the ground.

Research, Advocacy, and Partnerships for Real Change

The IWG is advancing the recommendations of the Bayelsa State Oil and Environmental Commission’s report through targeted programmes and collaborative action.

Legislative Engagement

Working with Nigerian and international institutions to reform regulatory frameworks and strengthen accountability for oil companies.

Ongoing Research

Documenting the environmental, social, and health impacts of oil pollution, and producing evidence to guide litigation, policy, and advocacy.

Technical Assistance

Supporting the Bayelsa State Government and civil society with expertise on clean-up, recovery planning, and just transition models.

Advocacy Campaigns

Building pressure nationally and internationally to secure compensation, enforce decommissioning, and reframe the divestment narrative.
How We Create Impact

We believe that lasting change requires both grassroots empowerment and international pressure. That is why our areas of action combine community organizing, strategic litigation, and global solidarity. By bridging local struggles with worldwide climate justice movements, we make sure that the people of Bayelsa and the Niger Delta are not isolated but recognized as a critical part of the global fight for accountability and a just transition.
