Our Goal
Supporting litigation, stronger laws, and regulatory reforms to hold International Oil Companies responsible for decades of harm.

For decades, International Oil Companies (IOCs) have extracted wealth from the Niger Delta while leaving behind widespread pollution, health crises, and economic hardship. Communities are forced to live with poisoned water, unproductive farmland, and broken livelihoods, while the corporations responsible avoid accountability—often through divestment and asset sales.

The IWG is working to end this cycle by pushing for a new legal and regulatory framework that ensures polluters pay for the damage they have caused. Accountability is not only about reparations but also about setting a global precedent: no company should be able to profit from environmental destruction without consequences.

Why It Matters

Legal Action for Justice
Strategic litigation is vital to hold IOCs accountable for decades of pollution and to secure funds for clean-up and community recovery.
Stronger Governance Systems
Nigeria needs robust legal and regulatory reforms that close loopholes and ensure polluters face real and lasting consequences.
Global Responsibility Links
IOCs must also be held to account in their home countries, with international oversight ensuring accountability beyond Nigeria.
