About IWG

The International Working Group on Petroleum Pollution and Just Transition in the Niger Delta (IWG) was formed out of the Bayelsa State Oil and Environmental Commission’s groundbreaking work. After years of investigating the devastating impact of oil pollution in Bayelsa and across the Niger Delta, the Commission released its landmark report An Environmental Genocide in 2024. The findings revealed the true scale of destruction caused by decades of oil exploitation, and the urgent need for justice, accountability, and remediation.

Building on this foundation, the IWG brings together commissioners, Nigerian civil society, and international partners to drive change. Our work connects local struggles in the Niger Delta with global debates on climate justice, loss and damage, and energy transition—ensuring that the lessons learned in Bayelsa shape more equitable outcomes across Africa and the Global South.
