Our Goal
Connecting Niger Delta struggles with international movements on climate justice, loss and damage, and just transition.
The crisis in the Niger Delta is not only a local issue—it is a global test case for environmental justice and energy transition. Oil companies that profit from destruction in Bayelsa and across the Niger Delta are often headquartered in wealthy nations, meaning accountability must also extend beyond Nigeria.
By connecting local struggles to global debates on climate justice, loss and damage, and just transition, the IWG ensures that communities most affected by fossil fuel extraction are not silenced. Their realities must shape the way the world transitions away from oil and gas, ensuring equity and fairness for vulnerable populations.
Why It Matters
Amplifying Local Voices
We work to ensure Niger Delta communities are heard in global climate discussions and not left behind in energy transition plans.
Shaping Global Debates
Lessons from Bayelsa inform wider debates on climate justice, loss and damage, and accountability for fossil fuel harm.
Building Shared Movements
We connect with civil society, governments, and allies worldwide to strengthen solidarity and drive collective action.
