The IWG is pleased to announce we are supporting a Moot competition alongside the Nigerian Network of University Legal Aid Institutions and a consortium of partners. The theme of the competition is “Historical Wrongs and Contemporary Remedies” and the briefs will explore complex issues of environmental rights, remedies and responsibilities in Nigeria, confronting the question of who pays for climate and environmental harm and the role of law in ensuring environmental remediation.
Professor Engobo Emeseh, founding member of the IWG and Professor of Environmental and Energy Law & Head of Department of Law and Criminology at the University of Aberystwyth, highlights the importance of this Moot competiton:
“One of the stark outcomes from the Bayelsa State Oil and Environmental Commission report, and indeed the reality of decades of oil pollution in the Niger Delta is the lack of access to justice. The EJCIL mooting competition for undergraduates helps cultivate the next generation of lawyers, equipping this emerging crop of advocates with the skills and confidence to see, name and challenge both historical and ongoing injustices for victims and the environment. By empowering young people to engage critically with the realities of environmental and climate justice, it strengthens the work of the IWG in securing fair and long term justice and accountability for the Niger Delta and beyond.”
The competition will bring together legal experts, academics, civil society organizations, and policymakers to advance transformative research, dialogue, and advocacy for environmental and climate justice across Nigeria and globally.
Registration for faculty of law and law clinics to indicate their interest in participating in the moot competition is now open. Please follow this link for more information and to register your interest.
